ARK Free School

This is one of the first batch of 11 UK Free Schools for 2011 and includes the refurbishment of the Grade 2 listed (and largely derelict) Wormholt library, a new two storey building reflecting the vernacular of the library and the refurbishment of the 1930’s infant welfare centre to be completed following the new build.

By working closely with English Heritage the new design will enable an oasis of calm with the existing building and external play areas being protected by the new building. A sensitive refurbishment of the existing classical building retains and repairs the important features such as the dome while opening up the interior for a wide variety of use. The new building takes the materiality of the existing but re interprets this using modern construction techniques and environmental treatments. The ample site grounds are dotted with mature trees and have a good mixture of spaces for outdoor play and learning.

Green Count:

- re-use of existing building

- tree planting and conserving

- after school uses for sustainable future
