Clinton Goes Green at HefmA

Clinton Green, our Director of Project Management, spoke at HefmA a conference for Directors of Estates and Facilities within the NHS South Central Strategic Health Authority region on the issues of energy efficiency measures and carbon reduction initiatives.
Hunters has been working in partnership with Scott Wilson and Bevan Brittan on investigating quick pay back building elements that can be used as part of a refurbishment and estate rationalisation process to improve various areas of the NHS Estate. Bevan Brittan have been incorporated into the team to assist and establish the legal liabilities for existing PFI hospitals, the potential structure of the proposed contracts and overall procurement of the Eco Refurbishment Initiative (ERI).
Clinton commented ‘Our aim is to reduce carbon emissions, create better space utilisation and refurbish the NHS estate using the money saved on utilities and the money generated from the new carbon tax on large utility users to fund the private / public loan to deliver this work’.
The team spoke of similar initiatives within other public sector and commercial organisations and all parties agreed that evidence from these sectors would be extremely useful to learn and understand how similar issues could be handled in the NHS.
He added ‘The challenge to us all is “how this could possibly be delivered within the current market of streamlined budgets and the carbon reduction targets set by the Government”. The NHS concluded that this was an exciting initiative and something that they would be keen to take further within the NHS and Treasury. Their concerns were only that it had not yet been delivered at any NHS site using public or private sector funds to date but it was agreed that it was a high priority for the NHS to deliver within a commercially affordable fast track initiative.’
